Technical visit to AGH University's ACK Cyfronet

UNESCO Fellows at Academic Computer Center Cyfronet AGH during a guided visit, viewing presentations on supercomputing infrastructure and learning about high-performance systems used for advanced scientific and industrial research.

Technical visit to AGH University's ACK Cyfronet

On October 22, 2025, UNESCO fellows had the opportunity to visit the Academic Computer Center Cyfronet AGH (ACK Cyfronet AGH), a leading institution providing computational resources, storage, and advanced software for the needs of science and industry.
The visit began with a presentation showcasing the extensive capabilities of ACK Cyfronet AGH, along with an overview of its world-class technological solutions, including computational systems that rank among the elite group of supercomputers on the TOP500 and Green500 lists. Participants had the opportunity to learn detailed information about the features and parameters of each of the supercomputers available at ACK Cyfronet AGH:
•    Helios Supercomputer – one of the newest systems at ACK Cyfronet AGH, offering an impressive computing power of 35 PetaFlops. Built on the HPE Cray EX4000 platform and equipped with 75,264 AMD Zen4 computing cores and 440 NVIDIA Grace Hopper GH200 superchips, it allows for highly complex calculations.
•    Athena Supercomputer – the top-rated computational system in Poland since 2022, with a computing power of 7.7 PFlops. It consists of servers with AMD EPYC processors and NVIDIA A100 GPGPU cards, enabling a wide range of scientific and industrial tasks.
•    Ares Supercomputer – equipped with both CPU and GPU components, providing a total computational power of 4 PFlops. Built with Intel Xeon Platinum processors and NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPGPU cards, it is well-suited for handling large datasets and advanced simulations.
•    Prometheus Supercomputer – historically one of the leading supercomputers in Poland, frequently listed on the TOP500, offering 2.7 PFlops of computing power. Built with servers featuring Intel Xeon processors and NVIDIA Tesla GPGPU accelerators, it is utilized in many research projects.
During the visit, participants learned that the supercomputers at ACK Cyfronet AGH enable a drastic reduction in the time required for advanced calculations, which could take hundreds of years on standard equipment. Thanks to these resources, computation times are reduced to just hours or weeks, which is of immense value to the Polish research community.
ACK Cyfronet AGH also provides extensive support for its users, from training sessions to individual consultations with experts, allowing for the full utilization of the available resources.
Finally, it is worth noting that ACK Cyfronet AGH is the recipient of the nawa.pl award in the "Investment Expert" category for its outstanding development of computational and network infrastructure, contributing to the dynamic scientific progress in Poland.
