The subject and scope of the UNESCO AGH Chair's activities are defined by UNESCO and AGH University in the Agreement and specifically concern:
- inspiring scientific research for sustainable development, environmental benefits, and the management of natural resources,
- building favorable strategies and capacity in science, technology, and innovation,
- building cooperation between universities, higher education institutions, training centers, and research centers through the development of partnerships between existing institutions (including UNESCO UniTwin Chairs) within the UNESCO network along the North-South and South-South axes, aimed at improving the quality of teaching,
- promoting ethical principles, behaviors, and norms appropriate for the development of science and technology and strengthening the focus of research strategies on ongoing social transformations,
- promoting cooperation between units belonging to university technical education and industry in the field of scientific research and training, and documenting them,
- strengthening the capacity and knowledge of people involved in curriculum development, training, and teaching in basic sciences and engineering practice, and participating in their transfer and innovation in engineering.
The UNESCO AGH Chair is a member of the International UNESCO Chair Network Programme (University Twinning and Networking) in the Education, Science, and Natural Sciences Sectors. UNESCO Chairs' responsibilities include, among others, acting as advisors in the development of educational, scientific, and cultural policies, building bridges between universities, decision-makers, and society, and promoting cultural diversity and gender equality. UNESCO Chairs support development cooperation within the United Nations system, particularly along the North-South-South axis. A key role for UNESCO Chairs is currently to contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
